John Doe & the Sadies Adds

I've been listening to a Yep Roc offering today and it is fantastic. The disc is Country Club by John Doe & The Sadies. They have joined forces to record some classics (with a couple of new originals mixed in) from the 1960s Countrypolitan Nashville era. Their takes are a bit non-politan and their take on Johnny's I Still Miss Someone is right on time!
In addition to that track I have added Are the Good Times Really Over for Good and Detroit City to the playlist. I think CAR listeners will be loving these tracks in short order. Thanks for listening.

Naked Willie Adds

The newly released Naked Willie record has a unique twist. In much the same manner that the "naked" version of the Beatles Let It Be deconstructed Phil Spector's over-production of that album, Naked Willie strips away the more overdone aspects of some of the best songs from Nelson's years in the sixties and early seventies on the RCA label.
The result is an album where Nelson's often overlooked work during those years is able to be viewed in a new, far more refreshing light. Nelson and longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael have done a great job "de-producing" these songs. And by "de-producing," I mean stripping away all of the strings, horns, and generally overproduced nonsense that constituted what was then known as the "Nashville Sound." Of course I like the "Nashville Sound" from that era but I like the "Naked" versions just as much.
I added a few classics from this disc and think CAR listeners will enjoy them. Apparently Willie had to fight a bit to get them released and it is good to know he still has a little fight left in him!

Old Californio Adds

I got a disc in the mail recently from a group calling themselves Old Californio. The disc is titled Westering Again. I would say neither moniker nor title is very catchy but the tunes are quite catchy. Imagine a blending of Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, late era Byrds, Beachwood Sparks plus a few CSN extended grooves and you have the sound of Old Californio.
I liked it so much I'm adding 5 tracks to the CAR playlist later tonight. Those tracks will be Mother Road, City Lines, Joseph Campbell, From the Mouths of Babes & California Goodness. Enjoy and remember.......the CD sleeves are screened individually.........whatever that means?

No More Virgins?

Remaining U.S. Virgin Megastores to be gone by Summer
By: Muriel Vega on March 6, 2009 3
By: Muriel Vega on March 6, 2009 3
It seems digital music sales and illegal file-sharing are about to claim yet another victim of the recording industry. In light of the closing of the iconic Times Square Virgin Megastore in April, the chief executive of Virgin Entertainment Group Inc. announced that the six remaining U.S. Virgin stores will be closed by Summer due to the slowing of the economy and declining record sales.
Vornado, the company that owns the Times Square location, pressured the struggling chain to either pay more rent or leave the property. According to the Vornado executive vice-president, Virgin pays $54 a square foot in an area where rents are around $700 a square foot because of the prime location. The location in Times Square will be now taken over by clothing store Forever 21.The Times Square location will close in April, and will be followed by stores in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orlando and Denver, all before summer. By then, about 1,000 staff members will be laid off, plus 60 employees from corporate. All other stores were closed last year.Despite broadening its product offerings to apparel and electronics, Virgin continued to lose out to digital music sales and online music stores like iTunes in the past few years.
Virgin Megastores will be gone after nearly two decades of massive CD-release parties and splashy store opening stunts. About 150 Virgin Megastores remain in the rest of the world, with stores in France, Australia, Japan and the Middle East, all owned by local companies.
